What´s our mission?
Chronic diseases related to poor lifestyle choices are now considered to be the greatest health threat in the Western world. Despite the fact that the pool of scientific data describing the factors affecting human health has never been greater, this data isn’t translating into better health for the general population.
Clearly, we need to do something different.
Founded in June 2015, the Icelandic Health Symposium will regularly bring together some of the best and the brightest minds from the scientific world as well as a broad range of other fields concerning human health and wellbeing. The objective is to allow them to highlight and share their cutting edge knowledge and ideas with health care professionals, policy makers and the public.
Our aim is to spark discussion and promote a greater interest in the ways in which we can all work towards improving our lives; empowering people everywhere to take charge of their own health, and giving them the tools to make good, effective lifestyle choices based on the best available evidence, as the science adapts and evolves.
GUÐMUNDUR FREYR JÓHANNSSON
Since completing my training in internal medicine and emergency medicine at Lund University Hospital in Sweden and Landspitali University Hospital in Reykjavik, I have practised as an attending physician at the Emergency Department at Landspitali.
Working as an ER doc, I meet people on a daily basis who are in the late stages of diseases and conditions that, with a little education and the right lifestyle modifications, could have been easily prevented. After all my years practising emergency medicine, I’m still impressed with the effectiveness of the treatment hospital workers can give people who present with serious conditions. This is however in stark contrast with our accomplishments in treating non-communicable chronic diseases, where our medical interventions are at best only able to slow the progression of the disease, and often just treat the symptoms rather than the cause.
Compared to traditional medical approaches, giving people the motivation and knowledge to change their lifestyle often proves to be far more effective at preventing and reversing disease, not to mention cheaper and more sustainable for our health care system. But there’s a lot of misinformation floating around that confuses people and can even prevent them from achieving their goals. This is why we founded IHS – to help highlight potentially life-saving scientific knowledge and effective practices, and to inspire people in all corners of the community to find their way towards optimal health and, ultimately, happiness.
